Karma looked at Roth. "Suppose he knows where we are? Well I mean, almost exactly. He knows we're coming." She murmured closed her eyes a moment. "...I'm afraid all I'll be seeing for a while is black and red." Karma almost looked saddened as she said this and shook her head. "I can almost feel it now." She looked worriedly at Roth again then back forward, making her horse go a little faster.

As usual, Lin was completely oblivious to what was going on and had gone so far as to veer completely off the path and chase a butterfly heading a little to the left. In this manner she disappeared into the trees and headed towards a glen, her eyes intent on the big blue butterfly. The falcon shrieked indignantly, suddenly feeling betrayed for a pathetic blue insect. It had almost every intention of flying down and eating the thing in her face before demanding her unconditional love.
Lin? Unconditional love? Ha!

Linith followed them silently, listening to their conversation. More troops? I don't want to kill anyone else... Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath and tried to relax. A sharp sting pricked the back of his neck and he cringed for a moment with annoyance and pain. Slapping the back of his neck he saw nothing on his hands, but he disregarded it. Stupid bugs.

Roth pondered for a moment. "I think right now the best course of action would be to avoid the camp at all costs. Once Kerjal's master learns that we escaped, Kerjal will be forced to come after us, if only to save his own skin. As much as I dislike the idea of having him on our heels every step of the way, I like the idea of a direct encounter with him in his own territory even less."

Lin remained oblivious and obsorbed in her current expedition to catch the big, blue butterfly. It was soooo pretty! Finally jumping off of her horse, she chased it through the trees, through underbrush, up trees, through branches and even through a tiny dirt cave, that ended up being a tunnel. She landed on the otherside, still in hot persuit of the big, blue insect.

Roth was suddenly aware of Lin's absence. "Where is Lin?" he asked slowly. "Where is Lin?" He repeated, louder and more forcefully. He began to swear as he prodded the trees that flanked the road with his eyes. "Why must she always do things like this?" he asked no one in particular.

"She was chasing a bird or something..." Karma muttered but quickly made her horse follow Roth. "You worry about Lin a lot. You realize that she takes care of herself much of the time, you know? She's very capable." Karma was obviously trying to comfort herself.

In her butterfly-chasing escapade, it never dawned on the three-foot tall girl that perhaps the big blue bug was something besides a.... big blue bug. It wasn't until she was quite a distance away (the horse long forgotten and in fact, the beast returned to where Roth, Linith and Karma waited, it's saddle empty), that she began noticing things. The trees were looking dead and large cobwebs decorated the branches. A sickly owl perched atop one, foam forming about it's beak. Still, the butterfly pressed on and so did Alleyway.
Then they got to a high ridge overlooking a small valley. Below was a gravesite, seemingly empty of life. The butterfly flitted away from the ridge, heading towards a dark tunnel. Of course, with Lin's eyes fixed on the bug, she failed to notice the tunnel. Or that she was five... ten... twenty... forty-five and then some feet within it and it was getting darker. The butterfly had begun to glow in order to light it's way when quite suddenly a claw snapped out of the air and crushed it. The room gained a dull green lighting and Lin realized the trap she had walked into.
And didn't panic.
"You're ugly." She commented, looking at the more than slightly deformed Lamia. The Lamia seemed to have grown a claw on her left side instead of a hand. The other held a deadly looking knife. And of course, like all Lamias, despite the serpentine tail that replaced her legs, her face was one all of hollywood would be envious of. So of course, the comment was by no means taken lightly.
"Excuse me? Little girl, do you realize who you are speaking to?" The snake-lady asked in a soft whisper. In a flash, she had wrapped her tail about Lin, holding the girl up in the air in her coils. "I am Kahrgahn, the spirit queen." Lin frowned.
"Don't you mean 'spirit thief'? I heard from this guy in this city once- I think he was a bit tipsy though- that Karhgahn takes the souls of others and turns them into pretty things and draws even more into her lair so that she can eat their spirits and their hearts." Lin tilted her head to the side. "Do you eat brains too? I hear they taste like spagghetti." Karhgahn was not happy.
"First of all, your friend must have been speaking about another. I assure you, I don't eat souls. I keep them and use them to lure others in here so that I can eat them and use the leftovers for trade."
"For what?"
"Trade."
"Trade what?"
"That's none of your business."
"Why?"
"Because it isn't."
"Why?"
"Because if I told you and never had the oppertunity to eat you, it could ruin everything."
"Why?"
"Because..." The Lamia caught on a little too late. Lin had the knife in her hand and had burried it in the tail. Shrieking a sound that traveled directly back to Karma and company, Karhgahn dropped Lin and gripped her tail in agony. Rather than return to the entrance, Lin bolted through a back tunnel and ended up somewhere below the earth, the bleeding Lamia hot in persuit and seething with rage.

Linith looked behind him as the other two began talking about Lin. Watching a horse approach them, he wondered who was riding it. He was surprised when the saddle was completely empty. "damn." He turned his head around and shouted to the other two. "Lin's horse came back, but she's not there, where did she -" He stopped as a bloodcurling scream rang through out the forest. "Err...what was that?"

Roth's head jerked up as he calmed his wild-eyed horse. He shouted a strange word at his staff, which obediently transformed into a shimmering blue sword, about a meter long. "Follow me!" he shouted urgently, pushing his horse into a gallop in the direction from which the scream had come. The sword flashed and an opening appeared in the wall of brush and trees, branches falling away limply. Horse and rider plunged through it and vanished.

Karma kicked her horse as hard as she could, her horse galloping now. She started to call for Alleyway Lin. "Lin!" She screamed. "Dammit, Lin, where are you?!"

Go-go-go-go-go-go-GO! Lin thought to herself as she sped through the tunnel. Clearly it was made by the lamia, who knew every inch of it.
And that's when she reached the catacombs.
Which way, which way?! Erm... up! Snatching her scythe- which had shrunk in size for transportation purposes, Lin hooked the end to the top of the maze and hoisted herself up, running along the stony wall. The lamia chased below, but never thought to look up. This gave Lin the oppertunity to meander down an extension of the maze into parts the Lamia couldn't get to using the route she had taken. Furious, the creature slid back to the beginning of the entrance and sent her extra souls after Lin so that they might return and tell her where the girl had gotten to. In the mean time, she resumed her watch at the entrance of her lair, intent on the next batch of victems.
No time for wasting, no time for wasting! Went the mantra that was going through the elfling's head. She continued running along the top of the maze, hoping that dead people don't like the taste of little girls.

Roth's horse charged through the forest, looking somewhat confused as branches were pushed away by an invisible barrier about half a foot from its head. Roth kept his eyes in front of the horse, and soon the lush, green forest had become a dark, ominous collection of dead trees. Roth slowed his horse to a canter, and then to a halt as he spotted a large blue butterfly fluttering lazily about the entrance to a dark tunnel. His eyes narrowed and he got off the horse, muttering under his breath. He walked towards the tunnel, and as the butterfly began to fly into it, he made made a gesture, as if beckoning the buttefly to come to him, and whispered something. The butterfly changed its direction and headed towards Roth, who reached out and cupped it in one of his hands. He examined it closely, then let it go disgustedly. He turned to Karma and Linith. (I'm going to assume Linith followed, so Insanity doesn't need to make a "Linith hurried to catch up with the others" post.) "Lin appears to have become a victim of a Lamia," he said in a tone of disgust. "They're vermin. I thought they had been wiped out a few decades ago, but it would appear I was wrong." He began to walk towards the tunnel. "We'll rid the world of this one too."

"What the hell is a Lamia?" Karma said, quickening her horse once again. "It sounds like some disgusting snake..." She watched Roth. "By saying 'victim' do you think LIn was actually...?...I mean. We all know she gets into trouble but gets out of it easy. Right? You don't think she...?"

"Ack! Eww..." Lin had tripped right off the top of the winding ledge and landed back into the maze. Her rear smarted, but better that than her head. Unfortunatly she had landed right in front of a pile of rotting skeletons.
At first she was merely grossed out. The next moment however, she was downright scared. One of the skulls had winked at her.
"This... is very bad..." She wimpered. Immediatly she was on her feet and made a leap clear over the pile, but not before a rotting hand snatched her ankle. Sqeaking in disgust, she attempted to kick it off before she ran right down the tunnel. The pile of semi-animated deadpeople struggled to detangle themselves and slowly stumble after her. This is bad! Thought the three-foot-tall elf. Her lungs were starting to ache, but she ignored it for now. Her legs were moving faster than when she had been chased by the Lamia, possibly because of the disgust factor that had now been added into the equation.
