Princess Mononoke, for example, was crapified by the likes of English Dubbing. These are just my views... and I hated the dubbing in nearly everything I've heard in a language other than english... the characters are just so much more... /alive/ in not-english.
Here's the poo on Mononoke :
-ALL the characters don't seem to give a damn about anything at all. They're SO mellowed out at EVERY /EXCITING/ point of the movie, that they're just like those idiots in RP who say all that 'He smiled as she stabbed him in the stomach, and curved over to lick his blood. He then lept up like nothing happend !'
-Characters don't : grunt, moan, make realistic noises. Like if you fall, you'd make an 'Umph' noise , right ? Well, apparently, everyone in Mononoke are nerve-dead then.
-THE SCRIPT IS SO F****** S****** that you will NOT believe its lameosity AT ALL. OMG. "Please, oh great god, spare our village" or something like that. In the Canto version, WhatsHisFace just yells at the boar god to stop and not destroy the village(like a normal medival Japanese person), none of that animal-god sucking up sheet english-speakers seem to love so much whenever a 'spirit' or 'animal god' is involved.
Honestly, if you can't make it sound good, DON'T CHANGE THE damn SCRIPT.
-The voice actor choices are TERRIBLE. Dood, San and the main character dood aren't like... 30. They're in their damn older teenages ! Also, if the character is sneaky and oddly proportioned, give 'em a SPUNKIER VOICE. The monk dood ain't some caveman-soudning person. Also, why does Gonzo(the guard guy?) have an African accent when he's Japanese ? Not to be racist or something, but sorry, the voice(accent, otherwise it was quite good) and the character just doesn't match.
-Everyone mubles. Either I'm deaf, or there has to be ABSOLUTE SILENCE when watching the movie.
-Names suck arse. Badly. San ? Nightwalker ? Forest Spirit ? Wolf girl ? Great Spirit ? Jeez... I don't think they were even trying with the name 'San' or 'Forest Spirit'...
WTF.
-Edited music, or is it just me ? ... They changed the loudness of the War Song thingy... You can't hear the banging of some of the drums or whatever instrument they're playing anymore.

. Ooh, Whyte sure does love her Princess Mononoke. I personally love the movie. Maybe because I haven't seen the japanese verson I think it's really good. Plus, I saw it...3 years ago I think? So I can't really remember most of it. Except those spirits. Those were the best =D.
A lot of japanese animes are turned into crappy shows, by comparison. Like Naruto or One Piece. Augh I just hate Naruto's voice. In the manga (at least the one on the internet) he doesn't say "Believe It!" every 5 damn seconds.

((I'm really hyped up on Lunar New Year candy and stuff, so please excuse my ranbling of nothing. XD)) ONG. Sanji sounds so... screwy ! ... He's too cool for that voice... he's too cool for those... LINES. AH. Yes, yes... Naruto /has/ to say "Believe IT!" every 5 seconds in the show... it's really annoying... The manga of One Piece, and some of Naruto are actually better than the tv show. Naruto's voice is so scratchy... but Haku's.... *mad fangirl drool* xD ... could've been a bit better. Most English dubbing for anime is worse than the Jap or Canto version. Except, as my anime crazy friend claims, in The GetBackers or something... Never seen that show myself. Wish I had Cartoon Network or something more anime than YTV. Well, I watched Mononoke years an' years ago too, plus all of Miyazaki's movies... in Canto, not in English. damn, those were good. I wish I could see Naussica : Valley of the Wind again though, lost the tape to it. ** is a crazy Miyazaki fan** ... have you seen Howl's Moving Castle... ? You have to. Omg. Howl. OwO **Wierd Story Incomming** Freakishly, when I was about like... 6 (?) I watched My Neighbor Totoro, and my parents always said that me and my little sis were /exactly/ like the sisters in that movie. Of course, I thought they were exaggeratin' a bit... Years later when I was 12, I watched Spirited Away for the first time. In the scene where Chihiro is walking with her parents through that tunnel thingy in the beginning, she asked her said "Dad, where are we ?", and about 5 seconds before she said that, I had asked my own Dad, "Dad, where are they?". Exact tone and voice, /almost/ exact words. Freaky. Oddly enough, when I entered highschool, was clutzy (still is), all messed up, I watched 'The Cat Returns'. Again, my parents claimed strict resemblence to the age/appearance/personality of the main character... >___> I don't know why I'm telling my life's story through Miyazaki's movies.

I've noticed through english dubbing things get a little...boring. Though a good example of awesome english dubbing without too much change in the script is FMA. (Uh-oh. FMA rant coming on)
I have the first two DVDs and I love watching it in Japanese with english subtitles. It seems that is has a little more...Japanese authenticity. But when i first watched it in English then I compare it to the japanese, it isn't all that different! The angst that Edo has is still there in the English dub, maybe even moreso. The guy who does his voice is named Vic and I was like "*foams at mouth* MUST...MEET....EDWARD!" More or less if I ever met someone who does a voice over for an anime, I would call them by that anime character...because they sound like it! I was watching VH1 and this kid star went on to be a voice over artist and she is Juniper form The Life in Times of Juniper Lee and she sounds EXACTLY like Juniper. She doesn't have to put anything extra into it.
When I watch InuYasha I like it a lot because...well...InuYasha has hot guys in it <.<'. But I've watched a lot of anime music videos with InuYasha and the people made the mistake of putting english subtitles in their videos, I watch that scene on there then watch it on tv and I'm like "...it was better in Japanese!"
I believe the reason dubbing always seems so crappy is because Japanese is hard to translate into English. Japanese just kind of throws in words like 'no' for and or to or something entirely different. Sometimes, translators have to guess words because it is so hard for things to fit right and that is why dubbing gets kinda screwy and why directors just make whole new scripts all together. So there, Whyte. We had our little Anime rants

Spirited Away isn't so bad in English, though I do prefer it in Japanese. Once when I rented it, I sat down and watched it in English, then proceeded to watch it again immidiately in Japanese with subtitles. My parents: "... What are you doing?" Raptor-Chick: "Watching the movie." My parents: "But you just finished it!" Raptor-Chick: "Yes, but this is in Japanese." My parents: "Why would you watch it in Japanese? You don't know Japanese." Raptor-Chick: "It has subtitles and this is better. Besides, I can curse in Japanese." My parents: "...Oookaaaaayyy..." I've never been able to watch Princess Mononoke in Japanese because when I rented it, the movie place didn't have the DVD at the time and the library doesn't have it on DVD. It's not so bad because Keith David does one of the voices. ^.^ He's probably my favourite voice actor. I haven't seen Howl's Moving Castle yet or most of his others. I've KiKi's Delivery Service and hated it, My Neighbor Totoro and liked it and Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. I like his later stuff because the animation is so amazing and beautiful. Disney could pick up a few tips from him.

heh, a few months ago my dad was telling me that people think that the Lion King was based off of one of the first anime things called Kimba the White Lion. Some of the evidence was;
Simba=Kimba. Same sort of name, same sort of looks.
Some guy who worked on the Lion King came to an afterparty thing wearing a white lion outfit.
Another guy got interviewed on his views on the relation of Simba and Kimba and he was like "Yeah, I thought we were doing a remake of the cartoon of Kimba the White Lion, a show I used to watch when I was a little kid."
We Americans steal copyright I suppose...kinda like Ringu, the Japanese movie that inspired the Ring.
Anyway, I LOVE Kiki's Delivery Service. It was my first anime I ever got, EVER! I begged my dad for it at Walmart and the only reason he hesitated was because it was about a witch but I think he liked it when I was watching it because apparentally it has good values. What I want to see is The Castle In the Sky.
I want to see Spirited away as well but I have NO anime stores around me really. Dad got me the first FMA DVD's off ebay. I think I could buy a boatload of anime from ebay and still have my car! (doesn't have a car)
But yeah, Kiki is on video here at my house so I have no way to know what she sounds like in Japanese. I still can't believe that Kirsten Dunst did the voice of English Kiki O.O

Well, I guess translatin' Japanese to English is hard, but they /could/ still work on the character's voice compatibilty and other sounds a character would generate other than speakage to each other and themselves. Anyhoo... Kiki's Delivery Service was... magical, shall I say ? The little black kitty was my favorite character... he's too cute.... Hey, Raven... if you liked the guys in InuYasha, you'll fall head on heels for Howl.... XD ... in my opinion... Actually, everyone's face looks the same in InuYasha, their hair and costumes are the only things that keep them apart from each other. And their roles. Castle in the Sky was really awesome, especially if you love Sky Pirates or beautiful music and landscapes/building stuff. Other than the bathing place in Spirited Away, I think that Castle in the Sky was the prettiest of all of Miyazaki's productions. Disney tends to take a lot from other stuffs (movies, books, etc), without realized that they did so. Their artwork and movies are undoubtedly wonderful, but like Raptor said, they could get a few tips from Miyazaki. I only haven't watched Porco Rosco and uh... one or two other's of Miyazaki's movies... the Cat Returns is really wonderful for those that are always daydreaming about something magical happens to them and then the next moment they're whisked off to some magical land of some sort... *sigh*... x) I have Miyazaki's movies in Cantonese, on tape, and everything in Japanese with subtitles on DVD. There's illegal downloading for you.

Heh heh, dubbing sucks 90% of the time. I only watch movies dubbed if there's no subtitle option, like Iron Monkey yesterday. The dubbing wasn't that bad, actually. That was a pretty cool movie. It was funny how when they got punched their shirt would get ripped in the spot, and become all bloody. Then some guy died, and blood that looked like paint came out of his mouth. XD It was still a cool movie. Oh, sorry, off-topic.

I think I saw a little hint of Howl in the previews for Howl's Moving Castle that kept showing on tv. I would watch and I would say "Wow...kawaii!"
