Okay, some PlayStation users should know what I'm talking about. For those who don't, let me explain.
The designers of the PS2 had a brilliant idea, which was to make the PS2 backwards compatible. That is to say, make it able to play PlayStation One games on the same unit.
However, it seems that shortly after that idea, or perhaps in celebration of it there was a party with much alcohol and drugs, and the followup to this great idea was hindered by hangovers.
Where they went wrong was that although the PlayStation 2 is backwards compatible, their memory cards aren't.
In short, you needn't buy a PS1 for PS1 games, but you need to pay 30-some dollars for a PS1 memory card. Actually a PS1 costs about the same as a PS1 memory card ;D 30 dollars for a PS1 unit, 20 dollars for a controller, and 30 dollars for a memory card. Then maybe 15 dollars for a game.
Anyways, why this is bothering me so much is that my friend is lending me Final Fantasy 7, and I can't really play it because I can't save. There's no way I'm going to do the 70 hours required to beat the game all at once.
From what I played it was a pretty good game. At least when there's a battle it doesn't do that stupid shatter thing that it does in 10, which scares the crap out of me on a regular basis.
Would someone reply to one of these threads? This board is so cold. "Colder than a winter in Arkansas," as Maxell5 used to say. Don't ask me who Maxell5 is, because I'm not 100% sure.

I had this problem playing one of the FF complation disks, I beleive it was the double pack with V and VI; 12 hours into the game I decide I want to save, and wham, get hit with the memory error. One can only imagine what is going to happen with the memory format with the PS3...
With that note, it is intresting to note that FF was originaly a nintendo exclusive, but then abandoned to the PS. In that regard, I wonder what would have been the case if FF stayed with Nintendo, and FFVII was a N64 game?

Hm, an interesting thought. It's hard to say really. I think it would probably flop, because the N64 just doesn't have the capabilities of the PlayStation. The cinematics would have looked quite bad, and the quality would have been reduced so that it could all fit on one cartridge. The N64 wasn't designed to support multiple-cartridge games.
Also, if Final Fantasy X was released on GameCube, most people would have said f**k that and abandoned the series altogether. I mean, although I don't like X-Box, there are some games worth playing on it, like Halo. But nobody is going to buy a GameCube just to play Final Fantasy X.
On top of that, the GameCube doesn't have online, so Final Fantasy XI would have had to switch consoles anyways, or it would be offline. I don't know if eleven is only online or offline and online.

Actualy if you want to get techinical the GC does have online, in the form of PSO, sadly the internet card has mainly been used for a LAN experience.

I don't know much about the GameCube. All I know is that it suffers a serious deficiency of good games.

Its not the lack of good games that plagues it, it is meerly the lack of any prolific studios and a lack of games in general. Most platforms lack a large selection of an exculsive good game, for more and more developers are working cross-platform. Its just that the X-box and PS2 developers are on the ball and have produced a good pile of middiling quality games to fill in the gaps between the excelent and the "Aiiiiie my eyes are bleading, make it stop" style of bad games. The gamecube, however, has no such buffer.
