((It's only called 99 Red Balloons because that's the song that was playing when I started writing. It doesn't really relate to the story. ^^0))

"What's going on?" Kite asked her companion, Bokka. Kite was a girl with long auburn hair and looked to be about sixteen or seventeen. She wore a plain T-shirt with some blue pants tucked into a pair of boots. A pair of green-tinted goggles hung around her neck, the kind all airship crew members had. And, yes, she worked on an airship, with Bokka. A thin cord hung around her neck, and, attached to it, was a foot-long thin bar of metal that she used a weapon most times. It had a leather grip on the end. Next to her, Bokka shrugged. "I don't know." he muttered. he wore clothes much like Kite's, but with a red shirt instead of white. Strapped to his back was a humongous spear-pike-looking thing. He had short, spiky sandy brown hair that fell only slightly into his eyes, which were dark green. His pair of green-tinted goggles were on his head above his eyes. They hurriedly stepped quicker to the crowd, trying to see what was going on in the center of it. Two strong-looking men were fighting a tall, lanky youth, with blonde hair and brilliant green eyes. He wore a pair of fingerless gloves, a long, leather coat that almost brushed the ground, a pair of high brown leather boots and a green and yellow shirt that was striped horizantally. He didn't seem to be having any problems fighting the two adults that loomed over them. In fact, the boy seemed to be enjoying it. He would always be just out of the two mens' reach after he attacked, grinning and making smart-aleck comments. Kite and Bokka made their way roughly to the front of the crowd, and had been watching the fight for just a few minutes when the boy suddenly tripped and fell. Immediately one of the men roughly dragged him up, holding his arms behind his back and twisting them harshly. The youth gasped with pain, but struggled feircely. The other man smirked slightly, then hauled away and punched the youth in the stomach. Hard. The boy gasped with pain and sagged as he was punched again. Kite tensed as the man went ahead and beat the boy. "Kite, don't..." Bokka warned, sensing the warning signs. But it was too late. Kite strode out to them, yanking her steel baton and snapping the thin cord. She slammed it into the man who was hitting the young boy, then kicked him in the gut. Bokka muttered and ran out there, punching the one who was holding the boy in the face. The youth yanked free from the man's grip and finished him off with a kick to the face. "Thank you." he said, grinning at Bokka crookedly. Bokka shrugged and glanced over at Kite, who was twirling her rod of metal. Her opponent was gone. "I think we should go now." whispered the youth, then started pulling Bokka by the arm through the crowd quickly as it started to break up.They headed towards a street corner away from the hustle and bustle of everything. The youth leaned against a post and took out a pair of green-tinted goggles. "You work on an airship, too?" Kite asked increduously as the youth stuck the goggles on top of his head like Bokka's. "I used to." He replied, winking. "My name's Teek, yours?" Kite and Bokka introduced themselves quickly. "You know," Bokka said slowly, "We need another crew member on our airship." He glanced at Teek. "How good are ya?"

Teek shrugged. "I've only been on one for a little while, maybe a month os so." he replied quietly, and with a slight hint of sadness. "But I learn quick. D'you have an engineer?" Bokka nodded. "Aye, his name's Cobi, but he's with the ship right now. He's a moogle." Teek raised is eyebrows, then grinned. "Moogles are the best engineers. I'm with ya, and I'll take whatever you need me to be, unless you want me to be cook. Then you'll all die of food poisoning."

Kite grinned. "That's a bad way to die, I've heard. Anyways, I'm cook, so don't worry about it." Bokka smiled mischeiviously. "Well, I dunno. Sometimes I wish we had a different cook. She calls roasting boots a gourmet!" Kite swiped at Bokka in mock anger, but he dodged it easily. Teek smirked. "I can tell I'm gonna have a fun time with you guys! But, first off, d'you have uniforms?" Kite and Bokka both shook their heads. "No, why?" Kite asked. Teek raised hios eyebrows. "Then you better get one, mates!" he exclaimed. "I've got some old uniforms. They belonged to me da's crew..."

Teek became quite quiet for a second, then said brightly, "Come with me."
Apparently the uniforms consisted of a long, brown leather coat with a creamy white thing around the neck that was somewhat loose, like a thick collar. There were also high leather boots, a pair of soft blue jeans, green-tinted goggles, fingerless black gloves, and with each uniform came a green and yellow striped shirt. For each person, the stripes were different. Bokka's, the captain's, shirt was striped vertically, and for Kite's, who was unoffically first mate, hers were wide diagonal stripes. Cobi's wasn't exactly striped; instead his was a large X design. And Teek himself; his shirt was horizantally crossed. The odd thing was, each of these uniforms seemed to fit comfortably and almost perfectly, except for the slight bagginess. For some reason, whenever Teek mentioned his 'da's crew' or the 'former people' who wore these uniforms, he was sad...But just for a moment.

Teek, as was soon discovered, was a valuable addition to the crew of the small airship. not only did he work hard, doing odd jobs that had been previously Kite's job, he provided and uplift even in the most dangerous and difficult of times. he and Cobi, the engineer, sound forged a fast friendship, and much of his spare time was spent either locked in his room, scurrying around the airship, or down in the engine room.
