Ooc: This was something I had to type for an English assignment: write a short story about all humans being able to shapeshift.
The medieval ages: the time of knights in shining armor, damsels in distress, cruel kings, charming princes, and magic. Oh yes, magic, and that included dragons, elves, trolls, other "unusual" beings of the sort. But they usually kept to themselves, with exceptions of dragons deciding to burn down a whole village or two on a whim and the like.
Most would think that humans must be hiding in a corner of the earth, safe from these beings and magic. No, it was humans that had the upper hand. Instead of hiding in the safest corners they could find, humans were everywhere. Due to strange quirk long before, they were able to "shapeshift" into whatever they wished, and every one of them had it.
Unsurprisingly, they often abused such an ability, but the abuse was limited. The other creatures sharing the earth with them made sure of that, and a fragile peace resulted.
And there they were: a jumble of very diverse living things. That's just what they simply were. When voluntarily among humans, non-humans usually didn't bother to disguise themselves. Only the young, old, injured, and crippled did.
Our little story begins with Reika, an ordinary run-of-the-mill dragon, being booted out of a jewelry shop.
"And stay out, thief!" yelled a voice from inside.
The navy haired rubbed her sore bum (the angry shopkeeper had booted her out in the form of an angry Billy goat) and looked over the little gem she was caught attempting to steal. Disgusted, she threw it into the dust of the road. 'I go through all that trouble, and this is all I could get!?'she thought angrily. The gem taunted her, brightly reflecting light.
Glaring at the ground, she muttered about humans and their lack of artistic ability. It was common knowledge that dragons hoarded beautiful things created by other beings. All she had these days were little trinkets. Little Reika was only a very young thing, 11 as a human and about as young in her natural form.
Creatures disguising themselves, as afore mentioned, almost immediately give themselves away at the reason why they chose to do so. Those that did had certain qualities to them that didn't come to human minds as "normal" Strange hair and eyes were the giveaways in Reika's case. Yet, how long one was able to retain such a form reflected on one's ability to exercise magic, a very important thing.
The flexibility one had with magic determined status, and created ranks. Those at the very bottom were always the half-breeds, those with shameful bloodlines.
